Shoppers now ask ChatGPT and Google AI what to buy. Here's how AI picks products, the sources it trusts, and what ecommerce brands can fix first.
A shopper used to type “wide trail running shoes” into a search bar and click through ten tabs. Now many of them ask an AI assistant the whole question, in plain English, and get back a short list with reasons. If your product isn't on that list, the shopper may never see it.
The good news: AI assistants don't pick products at random. They summarize what the rest of the web already says. That means you can see what's shaping the answer and work on it.
How AI decides which products to recommend
Ask the same shopping question a few times and look at the sources cited beside the answers. In most categories, the same kinds of places keep coming up:
- Community discussions, especially Reddit threads where real buyers compare products
- Video reviews and long-form roundups from independent reviewers
- Product pages that clearly state who the product is for, with specs, sizing and pricing
- Marketplace listings and review platforms with a steady stream of recent reviews
Notice what's missing: ad spend. You can't buy your way into an organic AI answer. You earn it by being the clearest, most-discussed answer to a specific need.
Win the specific question, not the category
“Best running shoes” is crowded. “Best trail running shoes for wide feet” is a question someone is ready to buy from. AI answers are built around those specifics, so your product pages should be too. Say plainly who the product is for, what problem it solves and how it compares to the obvious alternatives.
What to fix first
- List the 10 to 20 questions your best customers ask before they buy, in their words.
- Ask each one on ChatGPT, Google AI, Perplexity and Copilot, a few times each, and note who's recommended.
- Look at the sources cited. Are you in those threads, roundups and review sites?
- Rewrite your top product pages to answer those questions directly, and add Product structured data.
- Make it easy for real customers to leave detailed reviews, and never pay for them.
None of this replaces your existing marketing. It makes sure that when a shopper skips the search results and asks AI, your brand is part of the answer.
