What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a proposed standard, published at llmstxt.org in 2024, for a short Markdown file at the root of a website. Where robots.txt tells crawlers what they may read and a sitemap lists every page, llms.txt is a hand-picked guide: who you are in one sentence, and the handful of pages that matter most, each with a line on what it covers.
What an llms.txt file looks like
Here's one for Northbeam Heating & Air, a sample business:

Does llms.txt help you show up in AI answers?
Not much on its own, at least for now. No major AI company has said publicly that its assistant uses llms.txt to decide which businesses to recommend, and Google has said its search doesn't use it. AI coding tools and some AI agents do read llms.txt files, which is why many software companies publish one for their documentation.
It's still worth five minutes. It's free, it can't hurt, and writing one makes you put your business into one sentence, which is the same sentence you want AI to repeat. Just don't expect it to replace the work that does move AI answers.
What matters more than llms.txt
- Letting AI crawlers like OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot read your site. Check your robots.txt and your firewall: block them, and those assistants can't read you at all.
- Pages that answer your customers' questions in their first sentence or two, with real facts.
- Being listed and mentioned on the websites AI cites in your market.
- The same name, address, phone number, services and areas everywhere you're listed.
- Reviews, and replies to them.
How to add llms.txt to your website
- Generate a draft above, and check the summary line and the page names.
- Save it as a plain text file named llms.txt.
- Upload it to the root of your website, so it opens at yourwebsite.com/llms.txt. On WordPress, use your host's file manager or an FTP app, or an SEO plugin that creates one. If your site builder doesn't allow files at the root, ask your web developer, or skip it: it's optional.
- Open yourwebsite.com/llms.txt in a browser to check it shows as plain text, then run the checker again.
- Update it when you add or remove important pages.
llms.txt vs robots.txt vs sitemap.xml
- robots.txt: rules for which crawlers may read which pages. For AI, this is the one that matters most.
- sitemap.xml: a full list of your pages, so search engines can find them all.
- llms.txt: a short, hand-picked guide to your business and your best pages, for AI tools to read.
Questions
Is llms.txt required?
No. It's an optional proposal, and nothing breaks without one. Most websites don't have one yet.
Will llms.txt get me recommended by ChatGPT?
Not on its own. ChatGPT recommends businesses based on what it can read about them across the web: your pages, your listings, reviews and the sites that mention you. An llms.txt is a small, free extra on top of that work.
What's llms-full.txt?
A companion file in the same proposal that holds the full text of your key pages in one file. It's mostly used for software documentation; a local business rarely needs one.
What does the generator do with my website?
It reads your llms.txt and up to 16 of your pages as GroowBot, following your robots.txt, and builds the draft from your page titles and descriptions.
